Eleanor Matlak Bules

Eleanor Matlak Bules, 83, a resident of Sunrise Assisted Living and formerly of Grandview Manor Apartments, died Thursday morning, November 17, 2011 at St. Vincent Health Center. A resident of Erie all of her life, she was born February 20, 1928 a daughter of the late Stephan and Mary Kubiak Matlak.

Eleanor was owner and operator, along with her husband, of Mary Carter Paint Store at 26th and Peach Streets for over 28 years before retiring in 1988. She was a member of St. Julia Roman Catholic Church and enjoyed wintering in Hawaii.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Bules; one son, Kenneth J. Bules; one daughter, Kathleen Szewczykowski; two brothers, John and Stephen Matlock; and four sisters, Josephine Mikrut, Agnes Maksimowski, Helen Erdely, and Rose Matlak. Survivors include one son, John S. Bules, and his wife, Edie, of Union City; one daughter, Karen Smith, and her husband, LeRoy, of Erie; four grandchildren, Michael Szewczykowski and his wife, Madonna, Denise Mims and her husband, Lonnie, Brian Szewczykowski and his wife, Jennifer, and Carolyn Cartwright; and six great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

In honor of Eleanor's wishes, calling hours will not be observed. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Julia Catholic Church on Monday morning at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Julia Catholic Church, 638 Roslyn Ave., Erie, 16505. Funeral arrangements were made by the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., Erie, 16504.
