Gladys J. Kernick Mumford

Gladys J. Kernick Mumford, 101, of Erie, died Friday, July 23, 2010, at Manchester Presbyterian Lodge. A resident of Erie her whole life she was born in Millcreek Twp. on April 19, 1909, a daughter of the late Daniel and Mary Buttnelly Kernick.

Gladys was the first spelling bee champion for Millcreek Twp. School District. She attended Erie Business College and was a sales clerk for the Sitterle Cigar and Bait Shop (4th and State), she also worked for the former Anthony Cleaners. She was a foster grandmother until the age of 90 with the foster grandparent program with St. Vincent's Hospital and the Martin Luther King Center. Gladys loved to dance to the big band sounds at Waldameer and on the ferry boat from Erie to Canada, and ride the Ravine Flyer I. She enjoyed playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, cooking, crafts, and watching her flowers bloom. Prior to her macular degeneration she crocheted and knitted her way to several awards. She was a member of the Gridley Chapter of the Eastern Star. Her love and unselfishness always put others first, we were so fortunate to be a part of her life.

Besides her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband Raymond L. Mumford in 1969 whom she met when he was a street car conductor, and her twin brothers Carl (at birth) and Kenneth Kernick. She is survived by her daughter Betty Robie and her husband George of Erie, three grandchildren Richard Robie and his wife Reba of Girard, Michael Robie and his wife Lisa of Erie, and Susan Parmeter and her husband Michael of Erie, four great-grandchildren, twins; Taylor and Mackensie Robie of Girard, Nicholas Robie of Erie, and Morgan Parmeter of Erie.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc. 5000 Wattsburg Road (corner of East Gore Rd. and Pine Ave.) on Monday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and are invited to attend a service there on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Darrell Greenawalt officiating. Interment will follow in Erie Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at Manchester Presbyterian Lodge for the excellent care they provided.
