Lewis Elgin "Bill" Knuth

Lewis E. "Bill" Knuth, 86, formerly of Erie, died Friday evening July 16, 2010 at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, GA. A resident of Erie most of his life until 2005 when he moved to be closer to his daughter's family, he was born in Erie on February 2, 1924 a son of the late William and Cora Tate Knuth.

Bill served in the United States Army with the 489th Battalion in the Philippines during World War II and also was in New Guinea and Japan. He was an active member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church for most of his life and was President of the Ushers Society. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Mission Church in Woodstock, GA for 5 years. Bill loved to dance and sing. He was a member of St. Nicholas Church choir and a member of the Erie Symphonic Singers.

Bill retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1987 after 35 years of service. He loved all of his patrons and helped them in any way he was able. He then was an employee at the Giant Eagle on Buffalo Road for 15 years where he loved greeting customers.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Robert C. Knuth; one daughter, Patricia A. Lotz; and two brothers, Charles and Edwin Knuth.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Tarasovitch Knuth; one daughter, Cora Knuth James and her husband Richard of Acworth, GA; three grandchildren, Jeffrey William James, Donald Lotz and his wife Amanda, and David Lotz.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Road (corner of East Gore Rd. and Pine Ave.) on Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to a Requiem Funeral Service at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in St. Nicholas Cemetery.
