W. Milton McLallen
W. Milton McLallen, 84, of Erie and formerly of Lake Pleasant Road, was suddenly called home to his Lord and Savior Monday, June 29, 2009. A resident of Erie all of his life, he was born on May 4, 1925 a son of the late Wade L. and Ellen Anderson McLallen.
He was a graduate of Academy High School and was an expert finishing carpenter who started his career by working for residential home builders. He later transitioned into commercial construction and worked with several large contractors when he was a member of the Local #81 Carpenter's Union. He personally constructed many homes for family and close relatives.
He was a long standing member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served as an usher and part of building and maintenance committees. He spent many hours on church projects and helping others with their home remodeling tasks. His ministry during his retirement years was helping others and was quick to visit others that were sick. He used his woodworking skills to help his family and friends.
His favorite pastime up until his death was riding his bicycle. He covered many miles around Erie County and annually rode from his east side home around Presque Isle and back which is approximately 28 miles.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 57 years, Velma "Dolly" Hinderliter McLallen, one son, Todd McLallen of Erie; two daughters, Bonnie Hess and her husband Robert of Erie and Joy Gribbin and her husband John of France; one sister, Esther Ann Pepper and her husband Carl of Erie; 11 grandchildren, Janelle, Joseph, and Julie Gribbin, Ryan Hess and his wife Elizabeth, Patrick Hess and his wife Nicole, Kyle Hess, Kevin Hess, and Naomi, Phillip, Nathan, and Melanie McLallen; a niece, Julie Pepper Pilkington and her husband Trinity; and two great nieces. He will be sadly missed by many close friends and relatives.
Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Road (corner of East Gore and Pine Ave.) on Thursday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to services at Bethel Baptist Church, 1781 W. 38th Street on Friday at 1:30 p.m.. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
