Rufus B. Conley

Rufus B. Conley, 64, of Erie, died Wednesday afternoon June 17, 2009 at his residence following a brief battle with cancer. A resident of Erie most of his life, he was born in Tazewell, VA on October 25, 1944 a son of William and Janis Wright Conley.

Rufus was a 1962 graduate of Academy High School and had worked at the G.E. for 30 years before retiring in 2001. He was a member of the Moose Club and enjoyed Nascar, Texas Hold 'Em, collecting coins, camping, and spending his winters in Arcadia, FL.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Ethan McCoy; one sister, Connie Burch; and two brothers, Robert and Billy Moffatt.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 24 years, Sue McCoy Conley; three daughters, Susan Hayes of Girard, Sherry Kocher and her husband Steven of Erie, and Peggy Barta of Grand Forks, ND; four sons, Tim Conley and his wife Tracey of Erie, Edward Lazeski and his wife Jacquelyn of Erie, Troy Conley and his wife Cindy of Union City, and Dan McCoy and his wife Jennifer of Lake City; three sisters, Violet Oaks and her husband Frank of Erie, Betty Kurbits of Pontiac, MI, and Tina Surroukh and her husband Mustopha of Sarasota, FL; two brothers, George Moffatt of Erie and David Moffatt of Havre de Grace, MD; and 13 grandchildren. Many nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Road (corner of East Gore and Pine Ave.) on Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until the time of services at 1:30 p.m. officiated by Rev. George Kennedy. Burial will be in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
