Carolyn Simmerer Cunningham
Carolyn Simmerer Cunningham, 67, a resident of Millcreek, died Sunday morning February 8, 2009 at Hamot Medical Center following a lengthy illness. A resident of Erie since 1971, she was born in Chicago, Ill on August 29, 1941 a daughter of the late Carleton and Esther Kline Simmerer.
Carolyn was a 1963 graduate of Allegheny College where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and minored in French and Secretarial Studies. She went on to work as a secretary with Northrop Corporation and Xerox Data Systems in California. She had been a legal secretary with Judge Levin at the Erie County Courthouse for 17 years and had worked as a legal secretary for the McDonald Group since 1996. Carolyn loved reading, cross stitch, going to the beach, and especially helping her son Kevin with his business.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Oakley; a brother, Philip Simmerer; and a brother in law, Ronald Oakley.
Survivors include one son, Kevin Cunningham and his wife Kim of Erie; one daughter, Karen Cunningham of Seattle, WA; one sister, Marcia Smith and her husband Bill of Seaford, VA; her former husband Bill Cunningham of Erie; a sister in law, Sue Simmerer of Schaumburg, Ill; and a grandson Ethan Cunningham. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Road (corner of East Gore and Pine Ave.) Thursday 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to services there on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. officiated by Msgr. Dan Arnold. Burial will be in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
