Vance H. Carter
Designer of the Erie Korean War Memorial
Vance H. Carter, 85, an Erie resident since 1964, died unexpectedly on Friday morning October 17, 2008 at the Hamot Medical Center. He was born in Brackenridge, Pa. on February 22, 1923 a son of the late Vance R. Carter and Catherine Spickerman Carter.
He moved to Erie from Boston in 1964. Vance was retired and was the founder in 1968, owner, and operator of Ad-Vance Advertising Co. in Erie. Previously, he had worked for the C.I. Brink Outdoor Advertising Co. in Boston, Mass. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling. He was an Army combat veteran of WWII serving in the European Theater. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star, and the WWII Victory Medal. Vance was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and was the present commander of the State of Pennsylvania and the past commander of the local Erie Chapter #197. He also belonged to the VFW Billy Simpson Post # 470, American Legion Post #771, and the Siebenbuerger Club. He was very creative and artistic and designed the Korean War Memorial located on State St. across from Veterans Stadium in Erie.
Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Margaret Steber Carter; a son, Robert Vance Carter, Sr. and his wife Lottie of Erie; two daughters, Linda Tatara and her husband Martin and Tamara Wolfram, both of North Carolina; 10 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick Carter; a half-brother Adolph Spickerman; two sisters, Edna Smith and Virginia Campbell.
Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, 5000 Wattsburg Road, Erie, corner of East Gore Rd. & Pine Ave., Sunday 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to prayer services there on Monday morning at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Burial with military honors provided by VFW Post #470 will be in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
