Dorothy M. Curtis

Dorothy M. Curtis, 81, an Erie resident most of her life, went to be with the Lord on Sunday evening June 29, 2008 at her residence surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was born in Erie on July 23, 1926 a daughter of the late James and Blanche Dodge Curtis.

Dorothy was a 1958 graduate of Houghton College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and a 1960 graduate of Case-Western Reserve with a Master's Degree in Social Work. She had last worked for ten years as the Social Services Director at St. Mary's Home and retired in 1988. Previously, she had worked for eight years as the Supervisor in the Social Service Department for Family and Child Services. She was a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir, was a Sunday School Teacher, and served as a Deacon and an Elder. She also belonged to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and formerly belonged to the Soroptamis Club in Erie and Gettysburg, Pa.

Dorothy was preceded in death by two sisters, Sara Morse in 1995 and Beatrice Klinger in 1974 and a niece, Priscilla Follett. Survivors include a niece, Barbara Hakel and her husband Tom of Erie; a nephew, James Kuntz of Tonawanda, N.Y. ; several grand nieces and nephews also survive.

Friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of St. Mary's Home, 607 E. 26th St., Reed Street Entrance. Private burial will be at the family's convenience in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, 5000 Wattsburg Road, Erie. Since Dorothy's great nephew is a cancer survivor and started a non profit group for children going through cancer treatment, memorials are requested to go to Goldkidz, 8130 Hawthorne Drive, Erie, 16509.
