Richard L. Applequist

Richard L. "Apple" Applequist, 75, a resident of the Erie area most of his life, died on Friday evening June 27, 2008 at the V.A. Medical Center in Pittsburgh. He was born in Jamestown, N.Y. on June 5, 1933 a son of the late Theodore and E. Ruth Lovejoy Applequist. He had also lived in Tucson, Ariz. for nine years moving back to the Erie area in 1979.

He was a graduate of Harbor Creek High School. Rich last worked as a maintenance mechanic for 18 years at the Erie Press Systems and retired in 1998. Previously, he had worked as a pipefitter for the Duval Mine Co. in Arizona and also farmed for ten years on Williams Road in North East. A Navy veteran of the Korean War, he was a life member of the National VFW and a member of the American Legion North East Post 105. He was an avid reader and coin collector, enjoyed target practicing, rebuilding tractors, welding, and metal detecting.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Valerie Mae Kahler Applequist; three daughters, Michele Stillwell and her husband Joseph of Erie, LeAnn Griffin of North East, and Tricia Aldridge and her husband Robert of Wattsburg; two sons, Rick Applequist II and his wife Michelle of McKean and Theodore Applequist and his wife Carrie of Wattsburg; a sister, Roxene Herrod of East Amherst, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren, one great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by a grandson Bobby Aldridge and a brother Jack Applequist.

Private funeral services will be conducted at the family's convenience with the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, 5000 Wattsburg Road, Erie, in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in the Lowville Cemetery with military honors.
