J. Thomas Atkinson

J. Thomas Atkinson, 66, a lifelong Erie area resident, died unexpectedly on Tuesday morning April 29, 2008 at his Millcreek Township home. He was born in Erie on November 7, 1941 a son of Verena Witherspoon Atkinson of Erie and the late Richard Atkinson who died in 1984.

He was a 1959 graduate of Strong Vincent High School. Tom had worked as an electrical engineer at the Lord Manufacturing for over 13 years and was retired. Previously, he had worked at Zurn Industries for a number of years and was a US Army veteran. He was a member of the Silver Sneakers at the East Side YMCA, attended Trinity United Methodist Church, and formerly belonged to the Gem City Gun Club for a number of years. He enjoyed hunting and especially spending time with his grandsons.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife of 30 years, Cheryl Demorest Atkinson; a son, Jack Atkinson and his girlfriend Jen Tech of Erie; a daughter, Christina Baker and her husband Scott of Erie; 2 grandsons, Jeffrey and Joshua Baker; a brother, Richard Atkinson and his wife Rose of Murfreesboro, TN.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, 5000 Wattsburg Road, Erie, corner of East Gore Rd. and Pine Ave., Thursday 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM and are invited to services there on Friday afternoon at 2:00 PM. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 1030 State St., Erie, 16501.
