Raymond C. Bernsley

Raymond C. Bernsley, 74, a longtime Erie resident, died on Tuesday March 25, 2008 at the Leesburg Regional Medical Center in Leesburg, FL. He moved to Florida from Erie in 2000 and was born in Erie on May 17, 1933 a son of the late Ray and Ethel Yost Bernsley.

He had been an iron worker working out of the Ironworkers Local #348 and was also a member of the Moose Lodge. Ray enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing and most recently his favorite pastime was sitting on his porch and visiting with his neighbors.

Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Mary Elder; 2 daughters, Gale Brown and her husband Irwin Markle and Jacqueline Twaroski and her husband Stanley Twaroski, Jr, all of Erie; 3 step sons, Carl Elder of Centerville, PA, Kevin Elder and his wife Terri and Donald Elder and his wife Tanya, all of Erie; 3 step daughters, Paula Jones and her husband Eric of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Darla Allburn and her husband Al of Erie, and Karen Gioeli of Clermont, FL; 2 sisters, Deanna Samokar of Erie and Nellie Horn and her husband Ray of Harborcreek; a brother, Ralph Bernsley and his wife Maryann of Erie; 19 grandchildren, a great grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife of 18 years, Sylvia Smith Bernsley in 1976; a sister, Joan Bernsley in 2006; 2 brothers, Richard and Robert Bernsley.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, 5000 Wattsburg Road, Erie, corner of East Gore Rd. and Pine Ave., Sunday 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM and are invited to services there on Monday morning at 10:00 AM officiated by the Rev. William G. Cox, Jr., Pastor of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Lowville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to American Lung Association, 3524 W. 26th St., Erie, 16506.
