C. Elmo Young Cyphert

C. Elmo Young Cyphert, 89, formerly of 2860 East 29th Street died peacefully Tuesday evening December 18, 2007 at the St. Vincent Health Center.

She was born in New Bethlehem, Pa on March 10, 1918 a daughter of the late Floyd and Pearl White Young and moved to Erie in 1941 from New Bethlehem.

A 1938 graduate of New Bethlehem Porter Township High School, she also was a graduate of Feller's Beauty College in Oil City, Pa in 1940. She had owned and operated her own beauty shop.

Elmo was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and sang in the church choir for a number of years. She was a member of the church JOY Sunday School class, serving as its' treasurer for many years, and the church XYZ Senior's Group. She also bowled in the church bowling league and served as the league treasurer for a number of years. Elmo enjoyed sewing, crocheting, crafts, ceramics, gardening, and reading.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Marion "Sonny" Cyphert, on October 6, 1981; a daughter, Marlene Torres in 1974; a brother, Leonard Young; a nephew, Rickey Young; and a brother in law, Clair Powell.

Survivors include a daughter, Charlene Cyphert of Wesleyville; 2 sons, Gary Cyphert and his wife Ginny of Midlothin, VA and Mark Cyphert and his wife Susan of North East, PA; 5 grandchildren, Audrey and Shane Cyphert of North East and Julia, Courtney, and Kenneth Cyphert of Midlothin, VA; 2 sisters, Phyllis Powell of Timblin, PA and Patricia Emhoff and her husband Sidney of New Bethlehem, PA; a sister in law, Mary Young of Brookville, PA; a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, 5000 Wattsburg Road, Erie, corner of East Gore Rd. and Pine Ave., Friday 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM and are invited to services there on Saturday morning at 10:00 AM officiated by Rev. James Eaton, Pastor of the Trinity United Methodist Church.

Burial will be in Erie Co. Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church, 3952 Pine Avenue, Erie, 16504 and Fellowship Baptist Church, 2420 Cumberland Road, Erie, 16510.

The family would like to thank Sarah Reed Nursing Home for their kindness and care they extended to Elmo.
