Roger William Travis

Roger William Travis, 65, of Kinter Hill Road in Edinboro, died Sunday, February 10, 2008 in his home. He was born on January 21, 1943 in Erie, the son of the late Nelson Roscoe and Mildred Carner Travis. Roger was the second of eight children and worked hard to help provide for his family. Anyone who knew him would say that he had a strong worth ethic, and enjoyed a challenge, equally providing positive challenges to those around him. He built his life on faith, was an inspiration to many, and treated everyone he knew with kindness and warmth.

Roger loved nature and became a science teacher, a profession to which he contributed 37 years, spending 1 year in Meadville, 3 in Cambridge Springs, and 33 at Northwestern High School. He attended both Edinboro (the Turtles) and General McLane High Schools and earned a Bachelor and Masters degree at Edinboro University, where he studied science.

He cared deeply about his community and environmental issues, and was instrumental in many local projects. He served on the Edinboro Council, was a proactive president of the Northwestern Education Association, and was a member and former president of the Edinboro Jaycees. During his service in Jaycees, he coordinated the re-numbering of Edinboro homes to enhance postal delivery service to residents. He was also a founding member of the Edinboro Softball League. One of his proudest and most impacting achievements was the formation of the Royce Mallory Project in Edinboro and the annual release of trout in Conneauttee Creek, a project designed to encourage and provide fishing to kids 12 and under. As an avid hunter and waterfowl and wetlands conservationist, he was active for many years on the French Creek Ducks Unlimited Committee. Awards and honors include Jaycee of the Year and, in one of his proudest moments, the Golden Apple Award.

Roger was a well-loved brother, father, husband, grandfather and uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. He is survived by his wife Linda Walton Travis; a son, Kevin Travis and his partner, Nora Schillinger of Edinboro; a daughter, Renée Travis Laskey and her husband Joseph of Crownsville, MD; three brothers, Nelson Travis and his wife Sandy of Cambridge Springs, Dennis Travis and his wife, Kathryn of Edinboro and Richard Travis of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; four sisters, Susan Travis Brownlow and her husband, Ron, and Kathleen Travis of Ann Arbor, MI, Lee Ann Scaglia of Apopka, FL, and Joy Travis Miller and her husband, Bob, of Cranberry Twp, PA; six grandchildren, Aaron, Zane, Luke and Wyatt Travis, River and Audra Laskey; and two step children, Brian White and his wife Kristin of Chapel Hill, NC, and Karen White and her partner Jim Powell, of Pittsburgh, PA.

Friends may call Thursday from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Glunt Funeral Home, 210 Erie Street, Edinboro, an Independent Care Group Affiliate. A service will be held at the McLane Church on Friday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Brian Kelly officiating. Memorials may be made to the VNA Hospice of Erie County, 1305 Peach Street, Erie PA 16501, Ducks Unlimited Inc., One Waterfowl Way, Memphis, TN 38120, or the McLane Church Benevolent Fund, 12511 Edinboro, PA 16412.
