Irene Sasala Hrinda
Irene Sasala Hrinda, 84, of Girard, passed away on Monday, January 30, 2012, following a brief illness. Irene was born on May 16, 1927 in Dupont, Pa., a daughter of the late John Sasala and Katherine Machuga Stasenko Sasala.
Her family moved to Girard, Pa. in 1937 and she has lived in the same home all these years. She graduated from Girard's Rice Avenue Union High School in 1945. After graduation, Irene worked in the Payroll Department at Marx Toys until 1980 when the company closed. From 1980 until her retirement in 1992, she was employed as a Nurse's Aide at Pleasant Ridge Manor West. Irene was an active member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Church, where she was a member and former President of the Altar Rosary Society and participated in the many baking and dinner projects to benefit the church. She was also a member of the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Bowling League for many years. In her spare time, Irene enjoyed traveling with family and friends and loved tending her vegetable and flower gardens. Her Peony and Hydrangea flowers have been admired by many over the years. Christmas, Easter, and other Slovak traditions she held dear will be lovingly continued by her family.
In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death in 1954 by her husband, Albert Hrinda, whom she married on May 2, 1953 in Erie; her sisters, Ann Kremchek, Kathryn Gravagna, Mary Lambert, and Susan Slusser; and her brothers, John Stasenko, Steve Stasenko, Joseph Stasenko, John Sasala, and Joseph Sasala. She will be deeply missed by her son, James Hrinda and his wife, Mary Hrinda of Fairview, Pa.; her sister, Helen Downs of Newtown, Pa.; her brother, Andrew Sasala of Girard, Pa.; her grandsons, Stephen Hrinda of Cleveland, Ohio and Gregory Hrinda of Baltimore, Md.; and her many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard. The Panachida Service will also be on Friday at 9 p.m. at the funeral home. A Prayer Service will be held there on Saturday at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Funeral Service at 10 a.m. at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Church, 1022 Tilden Ave., Girard, PA, with Fr. Robert Karl officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery. Donations in memory of Irene can be made to the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation, 130 West 8th St., Erie, PA 16501.
