Elena "Alice" (Elder) Apple

Elena "Alice" (Elder) Apple, 82 of Fairview, died Friday May 20, 2011 at her home. She was born on November 2, 1928 in Walker, W.Va., a daughter of the late Wilson and Esta (Lowther) Elder.

She graduated from Cochranton High School in 1947 and later trained as a nurse's aid and as a hospice volunteer for the Hospice of Metropolitan Erie. Alice was also a dedicated volunteer at the Erie VA Hospital for 30 years with 7,500 hours of service. She delivered crafts and comfort items to veterans. She was known as the "cookie lady" because she provided cookies for various functions at the hospital. Alice was also involved with the American Legion Auxiliary in Fairview where she held five different offices during her 20 years of service

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Thomas P. Apple; two brothers, Blaine and Durwood Elder, and a sister, Ellen Elder. She is survived by a daughter, Mary (Apple) Kirsch and her husband, Brian of Erie; two sons, Paul A. Apple and his wife Nancy of Saegertown and Michael J. Apple and his wife Kelly of McKean; two brothers, Glenn Elder and his wife Jean of Union City and Warren Elder and his wife Nell of Victoria, Texas; two stepgrandchildren; four great-stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 3 p.m. until the time of a Memorial Service at 5 p.m. at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard. Alice's family would like to express their gratitude to all of the assistants from Hospice of Metropolitan Erie for their extraordinary care during their mother's recent illness.
