Robert Bax

Robert Bax of Lake City passed away Sunday, July 25, 2010 at Saint Vincent Health Center following a brief illness. He was born in Girard, December 21, 1924 to the late Clyde and Esther Bax.

Bob served in the United States Army in World War II and was deployed to the European Theatre of Operations in October, 1944. As part of the Artillery Unit, he was stationed in central Europe, Italy and along the Mediterranean coast. In April 1945 as part of the European Theater, he was one of the first troops to arrive to liberate the Buchenwald camp in Germany. Bob was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal. Following his discharge from the military he worked at the Marx Corporation in Girard and Copes Vulcan in Lake City, Pa. until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, wood carving and crossword puzzles.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Bax, and his sisters, Margaret O'Brien, Dorothy Johnson, and Helen Carlson. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Elvera Bennett, and his brother-in-law, John Fulgenzio; also by nieces Jackie O'Brien, Diane Reass, Darlene Reitz, and Dawn Myers, and nephews Bob Shields, Duane J. Bennett and Daren J. Bennett.

Services and calling hours were held privately by the family. Burial with full military honors was held at the Girard Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Lake City Fire Department, 2232 Rice Avenue, Lake City, PA 16423. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, Girard.
