 George D. Gabel
George D. Gabel, 62 of Albion, died following a brief illness at the home of his sister in Cranesville on Sunday January 24, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was born July 11, 1947 in Erie, a son of the late John H. and Mildred Webber Gabel.
He was raised and educted in the Albion area and later enlisted in the US Army. Following his basic training he was deployed to Vietnam, where he was active in combat operations in the Army Infantry. While deployed he received the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Vietnam Service Medal. Upon his discharge from the military he returned to the Albion Springboro area and began working for Fairview Evergreen Nursery. He later worked for PHB Diecast, was the Conneaut Twp Supervisor in Springboro and most recently had been employed by Gunnison Brothers Tannery in Girard.
George was a life member and Past Commander of the Springfield VFW Post#4965 from 1999-2002 and also past Club Manager. He was active in the Springboro Volunteer Fire Department where he was past Assistant Chief and enjoyed being with his grandkids, working on his home and had many hobbies including, hunting, fishing, camping cooking and horseshoes.
He was preceded in death by his best friend and loving companion, Carol Sumner also by three brothers, Jack, Wayne and Louie Gabel.
He will be sadly missed by his family, which includes a daughter, Minnie Confer and her fiance' Mike Franz of Springboro; two sons, John E. Sumner and his wife Nannette of East Springfield, James A. Sumner and his wife Raine of Springboro; sisters, Agnes Dobransky of Platea, Shirley Ramey of Erie, Joan Gabel of Cranesville, Dorothy Church and her husband Robert of Platea, Juanita Chamberlain and her husband Ralph of Albion; brothers Maurice "Eddie" Gabel and his wife Taeko of Tacoma,WA., Harold Gabel of Albion; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Friday from 2-4PM and 7-9PM at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home 309 Main St. East, Girard and are invited to services there on Saturday at 10AM.
Memorials may be made to the George Gabel Memorial Fund C/O Edder Funeral Home.
Burial with full military honors will be in the Albion Cemetery.
