 Thomas Paul Apple
Thomas Paul Apple, 85 of Fairview died Tuesday August 18, 2009 at St. Vincent Health Center, Erie following an extended illness.
He was born February 4, 1924 in Saegertown PA, a son of the late Charles and Ava Cook Apple.
He enlisted in the military during WW II at 18 years of age and served in the U.S. Army overseas in Europe in the infantry. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the WW ll Victory with Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Medal, and Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars. After his discharge from the military, Thomas attended the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics and worked 50 years as an airframe and power plant aircraft mechanic.
Thomas was a member of the American Legion #742 and had a private pilot's license. He enjoyed flying, working on planes and loved building and flying his own experimental airplane. He also built model airplanes and restored antique cars, most recently a 1934 Buick.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Nageotte and Betty Nageotte.
Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Alice (Elder) Apple; a daughter, Mary (Apple) Kirsch and her husband Brian of Erie; two sons, Paul A. Apple and his wife Nancy of Saegertown and Michael J. Apple and his wife Kelly of McKean; two stepgrandchildren; four great-stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Saturday from 2PM until the time of the Memorial Service at 4PM at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard.
