Eugene W. "Gene" Fileger

Eugene W. "Gene" Fileger, 87 of Girard, died following an extended illness Wednesday April 1, 2009 at Pleasant Ridge Manor. He was born April 9, 1921 in North East, Pa. a son of the late Jerome and Wilma Blystone Fileger.

As a young man he lived with his family in the New Smyrna Beach area of Florida. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII where he served aboard the USS destroyer Halsey Powell # 686, which protected merchant boats against German U-Boat attacks in the Atlantic and South Pacific Theaters of operation. Upon his discharge from the military he returned to Florida and later moved to Girard where he worked at Marx Toys for 22 years. He also worked at Tru Temper Corp. in Geneva, Ohio., and late Molded Fiberglass in Ashtabula, where he retired from as a Design Engineer. He was a member of the American Legion Post #494 in Girard and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by a sister Dorothy Fileger; two brothers, John and Herbert Fileger; two grandsons, Jeffrey Morton and Anthony J. Sienicki. He is survived by his wife Ann M. Barrante Fileger, whom he married April 27, 1956 in Daytona Beach, Fla.; also by two stepsons, James P. Morton and his wife Nancy of Fairview and Thomas A. Morton and his wife Debbie of Reading, Pa. ; two sisters, Lois Gilbert and her husband Wayne of Girard and Vivian Richardson and her husband Leo of Waterford, a brother, Royce Fileger of Ocala, Fla..; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard. Services will be held there on Monday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Friends Forever at Pleasant Ridge Manor, 8300 W. Ridge Rd., Girard, PA 16417.
