Herbert J. Connors

Herbert J. Connors, 85 of West Springfield, died Tuesday March 17, 2009 at Saint Vincent Health Center. He was born August 14, 1923 in Albion, a son of the late Firman J. and Frances DeWolfe Connors.

Herbert graduated from the Albion High School in 1941. As America was at war, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was deployed overseas to Africa with the 125th Second Army Air Force where he inspected and maintained all types of military aircraft including the B-25, DC-3, and the C-47. Upon his discharge from the military he returned to the Albion area and went to work for the Nickel Plate Railroad (now Norfolk&Southern) retiring as an engineer in 1984.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Conneaut,OH; a 27 year Life Member of the Knights of Columbus Council #5430 Girard and Fourth Degree Member of Assembly 0983. He was also a member of the American Legion Post# 0151 Conneaut,OH and the VFW Post#943 Ashtabula.

Following his retirement he enjoyed woodworking, repairing wooden boats and ballroom dancing.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Kirk E. Connors; a sister, Mary Jane Brower; three brothers, Robert, Charles V. and Harold R. Connors.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret J. Long Connors, whom he married May 11, 1946 in Johnsonburg, PA. also by two sons, Donald C. Connors and his wife Julia of West Springfield; Eric L. Connors and his wife Lara of Pleasanton, CA.; a daughter, Dianne F. King and her husband Terry in Florida; a sister, Martha Keys of Clymer, NY; a brother, William Connors and his wife Helen of Girard; 6 grandchildren, Jill Iszkula and her husband Steve, Derek Connors, Colleen King, Kevin King, Megan King and Pierson Connors; two great grandchildren, Ben and Emma and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 101 Olin Ave., Girard on Friday at 10AM. Burial will be in the St. John's Cemetery.
