Eugene C. Dunn

Eugene C. Dunn, 81 of Edinboro, died Friday May 2, 2008 at Select Specialty Hospital, Erie. He was born November 17, 1926 in Erie, a son of the late Thomas H. and Cecelia Niebling Dunn.

Mr. Dunn graduated from the McKean High School in 1944. As America was at war he enlisted in the US Navy. Following his deployment to the South Pacific, he was stationed aboard the USS Sirona and was actively involved in amphibious operations on many islands there. He was present during the signing of the peace treaty between Japan and the United States.

Upon his discharge from the military he returned to the Erie area and worked as a truckdriver for local firms. He later lived in Florida for several years, returning to Erie where he worked in the maintenence department at St. Vincent Health Center. He had most recently been employed by the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades, was a life member there and retired from there. He enjoyed boat racing while in Florida, was a member of the Gem City Gun Club, a life-member of the VFW Post# 7399 of Tucson, AZ. Gene was an avid fly fisherman and enjoyed tying flies, shooting trap and archery. His name also appears in the Guiness Book of World Records as a member of the largest canoe raft ever assembled. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte Irene Dunn and his second wife, Cynthia Hicks Dunn.

Survivors include his son, David C. Dunn of Erie; step-sons, Bill Sibbald and his wife Kathy of Edinboro, Thomas Palmatier of Albion; step-daughters, Connie Palmatier of Long Beach, CA, Kathy Sibbald of Pikesville, MD.; two grandaughters, Jennifer and Jamie Dunn of Erie; five step-grandchildren, Joshua and Ryan Sibbald, Tara J. Palmatier and Kiyana and Carisa Kiyona of Long Beach, CA. also several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Sunday from 5PM to 7PM at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard. Services will be held there on Monday at 10AM. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Eugene Dunn memorial fund C/O Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home.
