Gerald C. "Gerry" Chipman

Gerald C. "Gerry" Chipman, 81 formerly of Erie, died Friday May 23, 2008 at Pleasant Ridge Manor where he has resided the past several years. He was born January 4, 1927 in East Springfield, a son of the late Charles H. and Blanche Shaffer Chipman.

Gerry graduated from Springfield High School in 1945, and was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. Following his discharge from the military he began his college education at Iowa Wesleyan College, Mt. Pleasant Iowa. He enlisted for a second term in the U.S. Air force in 1949, and later enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserves, retiring from his military career in 1987. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from Edinboro University in 1955. He began working as a caseworker for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare in 1958, where he continued to work until his retirement in 1979. Prior to his residency at Pleasant Ridge he occasionally attended the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Girard. After he became a resident of Pleasant Ridge, he attended Protestant services there. Gerry was a member of the Girard American Legion Post #494, was active in the Travel Club and the Slide Club in Erie and enjoyed crossword puzzels.

He is survived by three sisters; Eloise M. Tau and her husband Elmer of Lake City; Lucile E. Klimek of East Springfield; Maxine V. Olmstead of Girard; two brothers Darrell C. Chipman and his wife Thelma of Lexington, S.C., Fred Shaffer and his wife Joan of Vass, N.C.; also several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard. Services will be held there on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Friends of Pleasant Ridge Manor West, 8300 West Ridge Rd., Girard, PA. 16417 or to the Humane Society 2702 Interchange Rd., Erie, PA. 16506 Burial with full military honors will be in the Springfield Cemetery.
