Salvatore "Sam" Ardillo

Salvatore "Sam" Ardillo, age 88 of Erie, formerly of Carbury Road in Edinboro, died Wednesday April 14, 2010. Mr. Ardillo was born in North East, PA on November 9, 1921, the son of the late Fortunato and Rosaria Piccione Ardillo.

He proudly served his country with Company A, 379th Regiment, 95th Infantry Division in the US Army during World War II, being awarded a purple heart and a bronze star. Sam served on the Frankin Township Zoning Hearing Board and was a member of the Erie Diocese Cursillo Movement #4. He was a volunteer at the Albion and Cambridge Springs Correctional Facilities for several years. Sam was a well respected long-time member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He retired from Finestra Inc. after 43 dedicated years of service. Sam loved gardening and was always ready to share the fruits of his labor, especially his garlic. His quiet dignity and friendly nature endeared him to thousands of people.

In addition to his parents, Sam is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret Maud Steen Ardillo; paternal grandparents Rosario and Josephine Ardillo; maternal grandparents Joseph and Mary Piccione; eight brothers, Rosario "Ross", Joseph, Fortunato "Tony", Jim, Charles, Fred, Settimo "Nelson", and Joseph R; and two sisters, Josephine M Ardillo Restifo and Mary Ardillo Ahlgrim.

Sam is survived by his daughter, Margaret "Peg" J. Ardillo Shaffer and his son, Frederick "Fred" R Ardillo (RoseMary). He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Anna Tubbs Ardillo and Virginia Steen Torrelli; a brother-in-law, Clifford (Carmela) Steen; five grandchildren, Colleen M Pifer, Edward J McConnell, IV (Lisa), Heather-Renee McConnell Rinderle (Rene), Adreanne Tew (Jason) and Ross P Ardillo (Kristy); eleven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., 2607 Buffalo Road on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend a funeral service there, officiated by Father John B Jacquel, on Saturday at 11 a.m. A full military service will follow at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery, conducted by American Legion Carl Neff Post #571.
