Melvin E. "Mel" Bennett, Sr., age 70, of Erie, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 1, 2009 at Hamot Medical Center. He was born December 24, 1938 in Spartansburg, PA, son of the late Chester and Margaret Stufflebeam Bennett.

Mel worked for General Electric Co. for 33 years. Prior to that, he owned and operated Mel's Trash Hauling. He enjoyed racing cars at Eriez Speedway with his family. Mel was an avid fan of Dale Earnhardt and Matt Kenseth. He enjoyed holiday dinners with his family and country music.

Preceded in death by two sisters, Rita Sanford and Betty Shuman who passed away on September 25, 2009, and one brother, Donald Bennett, U.S. Army.

Survivors include three daughters, Lisa Lawrence, Tracy Conrad (James) and Christine Riedy (John) all of Erie; five sons, Melvin Bennett, Jr. of Florida, Richard Bennett (Guila), Kevin Bennett (Alice), Paul Ellsworth and Douglas Bennett all of Erie; five stepchildren, Melinda Thompson, Leroy Proctor, Susannah Proctor, Michael Proctor and Sharon Proctor all of Erie; 19 grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Young (Russell) of Millcreek Twp.; two brothers, Richard Bennett and Everett Bennett both of Erie; his fiancé Vicki Wilbur of Erie; many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., West, 536 West 10th Street, on Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend a Funeral Service there on Tuesday at 11 a.m. conducted by Rev. George Alquist. Interment, Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
