Alexander Barlekoff

Alexander Barlekoff, age 78, of Erie, died Monday, July 27, 2009 after a brief illness at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was born February 16, 1931 in Erie, son of the late Harry and Caroline Barlekoff.

Alex graduated from East High School, Class of 1949. He served in the U.S. Army as a radio operator from 1952 to 1954. Upon returning home Alex worked at Hammermill Paper Co. for 22 years as a maintenance machinist. He then attended Penn State, received his teaching certificate, and taught machine shop at Tech Memorial High School, retiring in 1993. Upon retiring Alex "Sonny" fished 360 days a year and felt he needed to get out more. His greatest joy was the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by both parents and four siblings. Survivors include his wife Arlene Calabrese Barlekoff; daughters, Mary Steck, Patricia Hopkins and husband Dave, Carolyn Guthleben and husband John, Jane Gittens and husband Joel; his grandson, Samuel J. Barlekoff; many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Family and friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., West, 536 West 10th Street on Wednesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend a Prayer Service there at 10:15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's R.C. Church on Thursday at 11 a.m. Private interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
