William G. Billig

William G. Billig, age 86, of Harborcreek Township, passed away at his residence on Saturday, February 23, 2008 surrounded by his family. He was born July 6, 1921 in Sharpsville, PA, son of the late Henry and Myrtle Mannweiler Billig.

Bill was a 1939 graduate of Sharpsville High School and moved to Lawrence Park in 1940. He was employed by General Electric and graduated from the GE Apprentice Course and Engineering Night School. He retired from GE in 1981 after 43 years and last served as Manager of Purchasing. He later graduated from Gannon University with an Associate Degree in Law.

In 1944 he married Elaine Hillegas from Lawrence Park and moved to Harborcreek where he was active in the Township serving as a member of the Harbor Creek School Board, charter member of the Township Sewer Authority, and council member of Faith Lutheran Church. He was active in Little League Baseball and was the founder of Boy Scout Troop 175. He was an avid bowler and member of 700 Club. He enjoyed playing the clarinet and saxophone. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Lions Club, East Erie Turners, Siebenbuergers, Erie Moose Club, GE Elfun Society, GE Quarter Century Club, and the Glenwood Horseshoe League. Bill and his wife Elaine particularly enjoyed activities in GEER, a GE organization of GE retirees. Bill is a World War II veteran, serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. His most favorite times were spent with his family.

His grandson, Nathan William Billig preceded him in death. Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Elaine Hillegas Billig; six children, Iris Humphreys (Terry), William (Peg), Linda Jackula (Michael), Jeanne Henning (John), James (Carol) and Shelly Mennini (Jeffrey), all of Harborcreek; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Peggy Phillips; and several other nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., East, 2607 Buffalo Road, on Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Further visitation will be held at Faith Lutheran Church on Wednesday from 1:30 until the Funeral Service at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. David Laakso. Interment, Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 1645 West 8th St., Erie, PA 16505, Faith Lutheran Church, 5414 E.
